It started when my boss asked if I was interested in attempting a 6.5km open sea swim, from an island called Kapas off the state of Terangganu back to Marang jetty at the mainland.
It seemed like madness to me back then but nonetheless, I gamely took up the offer.
So off we went, enduring an overnight 9-hour coach ride before arriving at Marang jetty in the early morning.
After a good breakfast of roti prata and settling of the administrative procedures required for the open sea swim like getting our race kit, it was a long wait for the speedboat to take us to the island of Kapas.
The speedboat ride was itself an adventure, as it hit the water at high speeds, and each time when it did, it gave its passengers a very "nice" and "soothing" bum massage.
After settling into our accommodation at Kapas, which were holiday chalets that resembled kampung huts with spartan facilities but comfortable nonetheless, it was time to take in the sights of this beautiful island.
Nice and sandy beaches, clear and blue waters, together with the easy-going and friendly nature of the islanders, all make this place an ideal getaway from the humdrum of daily life.
It was the swim the following morning and after a pre-race brief and application of an anti-jellyfish and anti-sea lice lotion on our bodies, it was time to embark on a long 3-4 hour journey in the open sea.
The first 5 km of the swim was relatively comfortable but the final stretch required a lot of effort in attempting to counter the strong waves that tried to sweep me further and further away from the shore.
For no matter how hard I pulled and swam, I found myself in the same position, at times even drifting further back.
After what seemed like eternity, and battling thirst and cramps in my thighs, I finally reached shore in 3.5 hours and immediately down what must have been numerous cups of Milo provided for the competitors to get rid of the salty feeling that has been in my throat for the past few hours.
It was an immense feeling of satisfaction knowing that I have attempted something which I thought was impossible before.
We will never know what we can achieve until we really put our minds and get down to attempting it.
Here's to all those who participated in the swim...you have created history for yourselves just by taking part in this race! Never give up attempting the seemingly-impossible!
And to the Singaporeans who went with me...thanks a million! You have been wonderful company!
