Cruising down the freeway...
I have never really dreamt of myself owning my own set of wheels someday, thinking that it is such a liability to own a car in this country.
I do enjoy driving, and this trait started manifesting itself when I was still a little boy, when, being an only child and virtually having no other playmates, I resorted to games that do not require any other kid to be around, one of them being make-believe driving.
I would grab whatever circular object that was available, like a laundry basket, and imagined it was a steering wheel. I would imagine myself as a bus driver, driving around and picking up passengers; on other days, I would be just a delivery man, going about his rounds, making sure that the goods reach their destination on time and intact.
It was so much fun, and it was even more so when I started playing video games that involve driving, like Daytona and Sega Rally.
But there it stopped. Sure, driving was fun but I didn't really think I would get a car anyway.
Taking driving lessons when I got older was more out of kiasuism in wanting to make sure that I had a driving licence and that it may come in useful at work in the future.
No plans on getting a car.
It was only when I started working that I realised a car might be necessary after all.
Coupled with COE prices going down south as of late, owning a set of wheels seemed pretty enticing.
It was after much deliberating that I finally made a trip down to the showroom and ordered one... on my birthday.
Not exactly my dream car but one that is practical and takes me places.
My monthly expenses have gone up and there is a need to tighten my purse strings a little more but for now, I am revelling in the freedom and joy of driving.
Going down the highway late at night, with the sounds of my favourite tunes streaming in the car's interior is a feeling that is hard to describe.
Guess you have to experience it to understand.
Sure, there may be the daily jams and crazy drivers on the road to contend with, but they are part and parcel of the whole motoring experience, ain't it?
The exhilaration and the fun of driving outweighs whatever frustrations that I may face with tailgaters or the hassle of cleaning and maintaining my vehicle.
Time to hit the roads again.
